Resolutions

Making resolutions is a tradition, starting the new year with the intention of changed behaviors and habits.

Breaking resolutions, often within the first month or two of the new year, is also a tradition.

My personal resolution lasted approximately two days - which may or may not be a record. I could choose to frame that (and myself) as a failure, or I could see that as a lesson in the necessity to have real motivation behind any resolutions I make. I can make a list of 'things I should change' that stretches from here to the moon, but if I'm not motivated to change, that list will never grow shorter.

The other key factor is keeping it reasonable. It's not reasonable to expect overnight change on a grand scale. Most people can't go from no activity to five hours of exercise a day. Most of us can't go from eating constant junk food to eating none at all. Most of us can't go from never working on art to regular, daily practice. The step is too big; we need smaller steps to build ourselves up to the ultimate goal.

So I have a new resolution: do a little each day. Just a little. And when I can successfully do a little each day, then I'll do a little more. And then a little more. All the way until I'm where I want to be.

What's your resolution?
